Fourth Grade Takes Math Outdoors

Fourth grade students applied their math skills and strategies in solving real life math problems as they completed an outdoor math scavenger hunt on the grounds of Heritage.  They used the environment as they found examples of things such as symmetry and patterns.  Boys and girls measured objects, utilized their math vocabulary, and created graphs and line plots from data gathered outside.  A final reflection of how they personally grew mathematically this year was also included.

Science Olympiad

The 10th annual Franklin Regional Elementary School Campus Olympiad was held for the fourth grade students on 5/25/16. The event celebrated all things STEAM! (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) Students participated in STEAM activities that enriched their critical thinking and problem solving in various content areas. More than 30 parent volunteers as well as over 20 Franklin Regional High School volunteers gave of their time to assist throughout the day. Professors, scientists, and engineers in the field contributed to the continued success of the Science Olympiad.  The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh has designated Franklin Regional (FRESCO) as a showcase school in the region. This prestigious honor demonstrates excellence in STEAM education. Visitors from local school districts were invited to attend the Science Olympiad in order to implement their own Olympiad, or enhance their current Olympiad. Many thanks to the Heritage and Newlonsburg PTO for all of their support.

Let’s Go Rock Collecting with Miss K.

The 2nd grade students of Miss Kilbury’s class spent the week learning about the wonders of Rocks and Minerals!
In reading class they read the story Let’s Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans.  After determining how to classify rocks and minerals they went on an official dig!

The students had a wonderful time finding many interesting rocks around the property of Heritage Elementary!  They found a variety of sandstone and slate rocks.  There was even a piece of quartz found!  The 2nd graders have a new appreciation for what lies beneath their feet.
