Dr. Seuss Day

Miss Kilbury and Mrs. Morton’s second grade classrooms participated in their annual Dr. Seuss Day partnership with the Franklin Regional Middle School on Monday March 4, 2014.
Mr. Bruce Palmiscno , Mrs. Christy Belgiovane and their students hosted a morning of literary activities centered around Dr. Theodor Suess Geisel.
Partner reading, journal writing, number relationship games and a galley tour of art sculpture were among the favorites of the day.
Second grade students will reflect on their experience and their classroom books will be given to the Franklin Regional Middle School students who participated.
What a Seuss-tastic Day !!!

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week

Heritage Elementary participated in Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Week from February 10-14th.   Our goal was to raise awareness of CHD and honor the brave children living with “heart boo-boos.”
During that week each class made cards for “heart heroes” living today, exercised to honor the “heart hero” assigned to their classroom, and donated pantry items for families in the Cardiac ICU and Step-Down Unit at Children’s Hospital.
Congenital Heart Defects are the number one birth defect in the United States, affecting 1 in 110 births.  Up to 1.3 million Americans alive today have congenital heart defects.  Nearly twice as many children die from congenital heart defects in the U.S. than from all forms of childhood cancer combined.  Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death for children age 15 and younger, and CHD's claim about 3,600 lives per year.
Despite those statistics, most people are still unaware that Congenital Heart Defects exist.  Over the years, many have worked hard to make the week of February 7-14, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.  The goal is to raise awareness and to honor the many heart heroes that are living today.
Each month Mended Little Hearts takes 25 Care-Bags (filled with personal care items/snacks/and children's items) to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.  They also take pantry items each month for the families in the Cardiac ICU and Step-Down unit.

The Franklin Cup Race

On Friday January 31, Heritage Elementary joined together with Newlonsburg Elementary for a rubber band powered car racing competition. The final racing car designs were the result of a final project the students completed for the Motion and Design science unit. The final race came down to Heritage vs. Newlonsburg.  This year, the Heritage car edged out Newlonsburg by hundredths of a second.  Congratulations to Heritage, and the winning team from Mr. Mausser’s class.  This is the first of an annual event.  This year the trophy went to the hosting school of Heritage.  Next year, the students of Newlonsburg will host the event.

5th Grade Expository Book sharing with 2nd Grade Friends

5th grade students from Miss Calfe's class wrote expository books and shared them with Mrs. Calfe's 2nd grade class.  They did such a great job and the second graders were very attentive! One of the 2nd grade students had his interest sparked so much that he started making his own book already!

First grade-special holiday themed events

First grade students participated in some special holiday themed events in the week leading up to the winter recess.  Students created Gingerbread Houses with the help of parent volunteers on Monday.  During Polar Express day on Tuesday, students read this story, sequenced the events of the story, enjoyed hot chocolate and compared/contrasted the book with the movie.  On Friday, the students celebrated Grinch Day.  They read the story How the Grinch Stole Christmas, followed oral directions to create a Grinch craft, wrote about how they would make the Grinch smile and enjoyed some special Grinch themed cupcakes and Grinch “juice”.
